DORE FAQ's

DORE FAQ's

  1. Can a client use his or her own vehicle for the evaluation?
    1. No. For insurance and safety reasons the road evaluation uses a car with an automatic transmission and dual brake.
  2. How long does the evaluation take?
    1. The DriveABLE On-Road Evaluation (DORE ) takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.
  3. How much does it cost?
    1. Cost for the assessment can vary in different areas provinces/states. In some areas fees are assumed by the patients. Please contact your local provider here for further information.
  4. Is a standard government road test appropriate to assess and identify a medically impaired driver?
    1. No. The standard road test was not designed to evaluate medically impaired drivers. Safe drivers may be unfairly penalized and unsafe drivers may be missed. Standard road tests focus on basic abilities. Because these over-learned abilities are the last to be lost with many medical conditions, unsafe drivers may be missed.
  5. What is the difference between the standard government road test and the DORE?
    1. The DORE measures declines in driving competency due to medical conditions NOT errors that experienced drivers make such as a rolled stop. DORE scoring includes only those driving errors that are associated with competence declines and ignores the “bad habit” errors of healthy competent drivers such as rolled stop.
  6. Can a client drive to his or her appointment?
    1. No. We ask that clients not drive themselves to the evaluation.
  7. What do clients need to bring?
    1. Clients need to bring a valid drivers license. If a client's license is suspended or has expired a temporary permit will need to be acquired before the evaluation. Clients should also bring any hearing aids and glasses required for driving.
  8. A client is not familiar with city driving. Will that cause them to fail?
    1. No. A certified DriveABLE driving assessor will direct the client through the road test. Instructions and directions are clear and easy to understand. The DriveABLE On-Road Evaluation looks at skills that are used in both urban and rural situations. Rural drivers when compared to urban drivers perform similarly on the evaluation.
  9. Does age have any bearing on the evaluation?
    1. No. The assessment was designed so that age is not an issue.
